Creating Healthy Schools & Communities

Building Healthier Futures for Herkimer County's Kids

What Is Creating Healthy Schools & Communities? A five-year, $1.6 million investment in healthier kids and stronger schools.

In 2026, Herkimer County HealthNet was awarded $1.6 million from the New York State Department of Health to lead Creating Healthy Schools and Communities, a five-year initiative running through May 2031. The program works to create healthier environments where people live, learn, work, and play, partnering with local schools and community organizations to improve access to nutritious foods, increase opportunities for physical activity, and support healthier policies and practices across Herkimer County

“This grant is about creating lasting, community-wide change.  By bringing together schools, municipalities, early childhood education providers, and community organizations, we can create environments that support healthier lifestyles, expand opportunities for physical activity, improve access to nutritious foods, and help build healthier futures for children and families across Herkimer County.”
